Manny Pacquiao will face one of boxing’s top pound for pound boxers Errol Spence Jr. who currently holds the welterweight WBC and IBF belts in Las Vegas, Nevada on August 21, 2020. It’s going to be a title fight, according to boxing insider Mike Coppinger. It will be Pacquiao’s first fight since defeating Keith Thurman almost two years ago.
At 42, it will be a test for Pacquiao’s durability and mettle and how he will do it against a much younger, naturally bigger opponent remains to be seen. Pacquiao is no stranger to facing bigger opponents, however, as he has climbed in weight divisions from one of boxing’s lightest weight divisions and successfully dominating each division. In fact, Pacquiao is boxing’s only 8 division world champion.
Pacquaio has claimed Thurman’s WBA super welterweight belt through a split decision victory in July 2019, but has been inactive since, which led the WBA to declare him as champion in recess. Spence Jr., on the other hand, has an impeccable record of 27 wins, 21 of those victories come through knockouts. Spence Jr. survived a car accident in October 2019, but defended his WBA and IBF belts via a unanimous decision victory against fellow American Danny Garcia in December 2020.
