Why Is Errol Spence Jr. Not Fighting Thurman But Open to Alvarez and Pacquiao?

Thurman (29-1, 22 KOs, 1 NC) and Spence Jr. (26-0, 21 KOs) should have fought each other inside the ring in the past, but that’s not going to happen now. The unified welterweight champion has announced that he is no longer interested in facing Thurman at this point in his boxing career. Instead, he expressed his desire to face Pacquiao or Canelo Alvarez in the future.

In an interview with Brian Custer on a more recent episode of “The Last Stand Podcast, With Brian Custer”, Spence Jr. responded to Thurman’s statement cited by Custer, that Spence Jr. has to face him at 147 pounds, or he has to get out of that division. “I guess I’m moving up or going down. One of the two, because, I mean, that sh-t ain’t happening. F–k, Keith Thurman,” Spence Jr. told Custer.

“I don’t like him,” said Spence Jr. when Custer asked him why it has to be that way. “That’s just one guy I just never liked. Like there’s a lot of boxers out there that I really don’t care for. But him, I just don’t like him. I just feel like he’s just fake. Everything about him, I just don’t like him at all.”

As for a possible fight with Pacquiao down the road, Spence Jr. expressed his desire to face the 8-division world champion, but that he has yet to get past Danny Garcia first. Canelo Alvarez was also mentioned as his potential opponent. “That Canelo would be a great fight. I don’t know when that fight would happen. I mean, it’s up to the guys in the suits, Al (Haymon) and all of them,” Spence Jr. said.

Spence Jr., who is a former U.S. Olympian before turning pro in 2012, is set to defend his welterweight titles on December 5 against former WBC champion Danny Garcia (36-2, 21 KOs) at the Dallas Cowboys AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
