Will Spence Jr. and Crawford Finally Sign A Deal for A Big Showdown?

Errol Spence Jr. (R) dominated Mikey Garcia (L) for a unanimous decision victory during their boxing showdown on March 16, 2019.

Although Errol “The Truth” Spence Jr. (26-0, 21 KOs) is already scheduled to face Danny Garcia on November 21, 2020, talks about a possible fight between him and Terrence “The Bud” Crawford (36-0, 27 KOs) still crop up from time to time. And they draw a lot of attention every time their names are mentioned or paired with each other, unsurprisingly because they are simply two of the best welterweights in boxing today.

In a BoxingScene article written by Dan Rafael, it was revealed that Spence Jr. and Crawford actually spoke on the phone and Facetime to discuss a possible fight between the two in the near future. “We talk and say how we’re going to make this fight happen,” Spence Jr. told Rafael for BoxingScene.com, while estimating the fact that he and Crawford had been doing it (talking) four times already on the phone or on FaceTime.

“Basically, we come and go because I am my own man, but I don’t take care of my own business. So at the end of the day it’s boxing and we both get paid for it. I want to get paid for it.”

Spence Jr. said that he told Crawford that once he gets the job done against Garcia and a possible rematch with Shawn Porter, whom he narrowly outscored to unify belts last September, he can see that the fight will happen next year, despite from the fact that he also expressed his desire to face legendary titleholder Manny Pacquiao.

“Then there’s nothing left on the table but Terence Crawford,” says Spence Jr.. “Who else would it be?”

“I think it is definitely going to happen. I don’t know when but hopefully I feel like it can happen next year. This fight (with Crawford), I’m definitely going to push for it and Terence has been pushing for it too. Even when we’re on the phone or FaceTime with each other, we talk about it and say, ‘Man, it’s definitely going to happen, but I have to get over the guys in front of me right now. But the fight is definitely going to happen.’

“I don’t want to leave the division without fighting him because I don’t want that in my legacy–people saying that’s the fight that never happened. Crawford is the most intriguing fight. That’s the legacy fight. I feel like that’s the biggest money fight out there for me too, so it would make sense for it to happen.”
